Early Years ¨C BERNAMA KLASS. Real-Time Stock Market Information And Newslink. Real-Time Broadcast Software Design

Founded by a few electronic and computer design engineers who are also involved in the day- to-day running of the corporation, Sierra started its early years as the Real-Time software engineers who developed the unique KLASS. software for BERNAMA in 1993. KLASS. is a mnemonic for Kuala Lumpur and Singapore Stock Information services, a real-time broadcast based stock market information dissemination system which provided subscribers with the dual broadcast data feeds from both the stock exchanges of KL and Singapore.

It also provided an interesting opportunity for subscribers to arbitrage on stock counters which were listed on both the stock exchanges; also commonly known as the Common Limit Order Book (CLOB) counters before it was disbanded during the Asian financial crisis in 1998.

Sierra was next entrusted to design the BERNAMA Newslink. Real-Time News Broadcast and Content Management System which allowed paying subscribers to tune in to the news channels and contents via the same incoming data feed.

As the official software house to represent BERNAMA for the KL ¡®98 Commonwealth Games in 1998, Sierra was proud to design the Commonwealth Games Real-Time Results Dissemination System as a value extension to its Newslink. flagship product, as well as being the base to disseminate the ¡°official results¡± electronically to press organizations worldwide such as Reuters, Associated Press (AP), Agence France-Presse (AFP), United Press International (UPI), Knight-Ridder and Bloomberg Financial Systems.

Design of Real-Time Elevator Management Systems

Besides undertaking such exciting software projects for BERNAMA, Sierra has also successfully designed, manufactured, supplied, installed and commissioned many Real-Time Elevator Management Systems nationwide as well as in Brunei and Indonesia.

Sierra has also been working with some of the major elevator manufacturers such as Mitsubishi and Toshiba via their local Malaysian representatives on the interfacing of the Sierra custom designed microprocessor based Remote Monitoring Unit (RTU) / Elevator Monitoring Unit (EMU) hardware to the actual elevator control panels in the respective machine rooms (lift motor rooms).

These RTUs / EMUs are managed by PC-based Elevator Management Software (which has also been undergoing evolution of its own ¨C from its earlier days (1993) as a UNIX platform based software product to the Microsoft Windows based product since 1998). The increasing demand for locally designed and manufactured Access control and security systems prompted Sierra to be involved in the business seriously in 1995; where it started to focus more on the ¡°standard products¡± rather than depending on the lucrative but ad-hoc project based income stream

As the co-founding directors / R&D engineers have hands on design experience in microprocessor based systems, the time to design and market the access control system products such as controllers and readers, inclusive of the RFID readers and PC-based software, have enabled Sierra to address consumer and dealer / reseller markets and intelligent building consultants alike; with its (then) unique ST8000 ProxStation. RFID readers with integrated LCD and keypad (circa 1998) ¨C winning many projects amongst many MNCs nationwide, particularly in Penang and Johor.

Sierra also managed to secure the highly challenging KLSE HQ Building in KL (now known as BURSA Malaysia) in 1999; after the successful deployment of a few pilot sites for the Securities Clearing Automated Network Services ( SCANS) building in Jalan Semantan, KL.

The IBM Data Center as well as the Fujitsu Systems¡¯ FSBM i-Command Center ¨C both in Cyberjaya; are also protected by the Sierra Access control system.

All except Cyberia are implemented in technical collaboration with one of Sierra¡¯s major value- added reseller (VAR) and system integration (SI) partner, Chubb (M) Sdn Bhd, a member of the Sime Darby group. These high end condominium projects entail the total security integration of card access control system, alarm monitoring system, CCTV surveillance system where the Sierra central management software orchestrates the Matrix Switching and Video Surveillance and Recording System.

These projects have used the previous successful integration of real-time alarm monitoring and CCTVs with Chubb (M) Sdn Bhd at Mid Valley City Megamall in 1999/2000.

RFID and CCTV technology advancements also meant that Sierra had quickly adopted the ISO 14443A / Mifare. RFID contactless smart card technology, popularized by the Malaysian PLUS Touch ¡®n Go system, as the preferred card technology these days as compared to the legacy low-frequency 125kHz proximity cards (non smart cards) from EM-Marin (Swatch) from Switzerland, or Motorola/Indala and HID from USA. The ISO 14443A/Mifare. technology, initially pioneered by NXP (Phillips of Holland) have now become a de facto and open standard for contactless RFID smart card based access control technology choice as it can easily be integrated with other biometric recognition technologies such as fingerprint and vein scanners, as the enrolled data templates can be stored inside the smart cards for a quick, reliable and secure 1:1 verification of the person¡¯s credential.

Sierra has also developed both low level (electronic hardware interfaces) as well as high level (software ¨C both RS-22/RS-485 and Ethernet TCP/IP) interfaces to seamless integrate with the third party CCTV network and video matrix switcher equipment to implement an Integrated Security System (ISS) for these high end projects.

e-PASS System: Integrating RFID Contactless Smart Card Access Control System with Biometric Fingerprint scanners for Malaysian Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE), Pasir Gudang, Johor

In 2004/2005, Sierra has also successfully implemented the e-PASS system, an integrated Biometric and RFID ISO 14443A / Mifare. RFID Contactless Smart card based Access Control and Time Management System for Malaysian Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) Berhad in Pasir Gudang, Johor.

Since then, the project has taken off to include two other MMHE sites in Seri Alam, Johor as well as their KL office in Menara AA. The e-PASS system has grown from an initial population of around 7,000 users to over 25,000 currently and caters for both the direct MMHE staff as well as outsourced contractors. These outsourced workers are managed and tracked using another customized sub system, the e-TOKEN system, which is yet another Sierra Technology designed system for MMHE. The coin chip shaped token is an ISO 14443A/Mifare. smart token with read/write functions to manage the many outsourced contractors of MMHE and Petronas.

Sierra Technology has earned a reputation as a manufacturer of quality products, and is recognized as the first local producer to offer surface mount technology (SMT) in our products. Our web based multiple site security monitoring software, is locally developed and we are proud to be acknowledged, as being the first in the region to offer such a solution.
